Cloud Computers Might Be The Next Big Thing - There Are Still Arguments For Renting Server Hosting

By Angel Hebert Talley

Dedicated servers are used for many different purposes and have been around since the advent of the Internet. Although dedicated servers are very different to the original dedicated server, they are in many ways similar. It is a common belief that dedicated servers only do one thing. However a server can handle many tasks at once. Servers will meet any of the following jobs.

Server hosting is very often used for websites. This can be shared out over multiple users or simply for one website. For web hosting a dedi server will normally be run on Linux as it is typically considered to be more stable. You also save on licensing costs this way. You have the choice of reseller or shared hosting packages. Shared allows for a single account, with multiple accounts on one server. You can host as many domains as you like on a reseller account.

Server hosting is also used for databases. It depends on the operating system as to what database can be ran. MySQL is normally used with web hosting servers. You can also pick from InnoDB or Oracle for example. Databases power most websites you visit.

Online gaming servers are what allow you to play you favourite games online with your friends. By using a dedi server for your online gaming you get fast paced action without the lag that occurs from using a listen server from you own PC. Essentially the server does the hard work, freeing up your own computer. A big reason for using dedicated servers for online gaming, is the connectivity. Being hosted in datacentres, dedicated servers have a fast connection to the internet.

File servers also make use of server hosting. If you are a regular Internet user, you will have been linked to photos on the net. There are websites that store these photos. The owners normally make their money through banners. Programs and applications are also hosted on file servers. Servers are finally used for VOIP. There are many types of VOIP software from Ventrilo through to Skype. Voice server software is installed and runs on a dedicated server. Users then connect to the dedicated server for a fast connection.

Recently we have seen the introduction of cloud software. Cloud software spreads services over multiple dedicated servers for flexibility and reliability. However dedicated servers still remain popular and will be around for a long time.
