Responsible Spending Through Printer Cartridges

By Thomas Roberts

If you work in an environment where printing is a frequent tasks than it is most likely that you already know all about the work involved in keeping the printer full of ink. This is often the most expensive thing you will have to buy for a printer. There are, however, some tips you can use to stretch your office supplies budget. Just knowing how to use your printer better or where to buy your printer cartridges can actually save a significant amount of money.

Probably the easiest suggestion to follow is to not let your printer set so the ink dries. If a printer sets for a period of time the ink in the cartridges will begin to dry out and you will have to replace them. It is easy to prevent this from happening, all you have to do is print at least one page each week to keep everything moist and working smoothly.

Another good tip is to always use the right printing mode when you are printing something. If you are printing items that only you will see, opt for a low resolution that doesn't use nearly as much ink. For plain text documents opt for printing with the black ink only so you won't waste the color ink when you don't need it.

Proofreading everything well before you print also works because it limits the number of times you will print a page because of errors. This is a great way to not only save ink but also save printing paper as well. This all adds up to a pretty good amount over time and will prevent you from going over budget.

All of these suggestions can save you money because they allow the ink you have to last longer. If you want to save money when you do have to replace the cartridge you will want to keep reading for additional tips below.

If you are a business owner that mainly prints high quality prints your best approach will be to purchase OEM cartridges since these are the ones that are produced buy the original manufacturer. The problem here is that this is the priciest option you can go with but for some businesses it's the best choice.

Alternately, you could also try buying a compatible version that has been produced with the license of the OEM so the quality is practically equally. This options is a little bit less expensive but some types might not be available.

The last option you have is to go with a refurbished cartridge since this is the cheapest of choices. This option does come with elevated risks, though, since many of them have been refilled with skimped ink. This often leads to clogging but is also the best choice for a business with a small budget. Just be prepared to deal with any problems as they are likely to occur.

The best way to get the most value from any ink cartridge is by being sure you buy only ones that are compatible with your specific printer and by also doing what you can to save as much ink as possible when the cartridge is in the printer.
