There are a number of other technical aspects to transit that you need to ask yourself or your provider about if you have it or need it. A dual IP stack is where you use a transitional protocol for IPv4 to IPv6 within the operating system. One for each of the versions of IP. The implementation may be different for each host, some using a hybrid system while others implementing IPv4 and IPv6 separately. Running a hybrid system is the most common for both the end user and on servers.
Protocols on routing need to be thought about on if you are happy to have a predetermined one way route out. To save money this can be done or just because there is only one way out of the network and have to go through another router first before reaching the internet. BGP or Border Gateway Protocol or BGP is the core routing protocol used on the internet and works by having and updating a table of IP networks or prefixes that can be used to designate network availability. By using an Autonomous system that has a set of connected IP routing prefixes controlled by one or more network operators and presents the common routing policy to the internet. The actual BGP is described as a path vector protocol which updates the path information dynamically. If a update gets looped through the same node this is detected and discarded and this is used in other protocols to avoid infinity loops.
Peering is also available, which is the voluntry connection of indepenantly owned and run networks for the purpose of exchanging the traffic between the customers on each network. The actual definition is settlement free or sender keeps all, which means the owners of each network will pay the other to exchange data with each other. This ensures that the revenue has to come from their customers. Many people now misuse the term Peering and really mean it to use when some form of payment takes place. As not to cause confusion many people now use the term "settlement free peering" to make sure that no one misunderstands what is being advertised or described.
It is through metro ethernet, that allows networks to connect from datacentre to datacentre. This is because the internet is a very large collection of separate networks operating from a common set framework of unique IP addressing and the use of the BGP routing.
